hiking down along the sliding sands/keonehe'ehe'e trail into the crater of haleakalā, one encounters an alien landscape of martian red sands and multiple small volcanic cones - make even more dramatic when the morning clouds descend into the crater itself. legend has it that the demigod maui lassoed the sun here, at his grandmother’s home, in order to make the days longer.
